1965 Duncan Cameron went to live with his uncle, James Thomson, in about 1882 when he was 14, where he learned the milling business. He was sent to the "Blackfriar's Mill" in London, Ontario where he obtained his apprenticeship. D.C.'s father, Robert Thomson, owned the Thomson grist mill and a shingle mill on parts of Lots 10 & 11, Concessions 2 & 3, South Orillia. When Robert died in 1879, his brother James took over the mills and D.C. later helped operate them. D.C. purchased the "The Peoples Mill" in Orillia from Mr. David Miller on 3 August 1898 and registered it as "Orillia City Flour Mills". (The mill had been build in 1887 by Mr. Peter Richie who sold it to Mr. David Miller in 1895). At some point, a Bakery was added to the mill site. In 1925, D.C. purchased the Park Mill from Mr. Herb Vick. Flour manufactured in the mills had the brand names "Royal Quality" and "Star Brand" (they also had "Maple Leaf Brand" but sold that patent to the Maple Leaf Milling Company). Other products produced included "D.C.T. Bran", "Vitamine Hog Feed", "Vitamine Cattle Feed", "Vitamine Chicken Feed", "Utility Hog Feed", "Utility Cattle Feed", "Utility Chicken Feed", "Vitality Hog Feed", "Vitality Chicken Feed", and "Vitality Growing Mash". The formulae for all were purchased from the "Motherwell" Milling firm in England. The Orillia City Flour Mills was destroyed by fire on the night of 5 December 1931. The ruins were still smoldering three weeks later. (summarized from 1984 writings by D.C.'s daughter Ruth Frances Thomson). Marriage Registration 010846 Archives of Ontario microfilm MS932 Reel 87. Witnesses at the wedding were William Thomson and Frances Passmore of South Orillia Township. The service was conducted by R.W. Grant at the residence of the brides father, Isaac Passmore of South Orillia Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Bridge - Wenzel
A lovely wedding was solemnized in the Evangelical Church on the 6th of Wallace on Saturday, November 29th (1947), when Grace Margaret Wenzel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wenzel, Palmerston, became the bride of Ross Albert Bridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bridge, R.R. 3, Palmerston. Rev. C. Smith officiated at the ceremony and Mrs. Elwyn Krotz, aunt of the bride, presided at the organ. During the signing of the register, Mrs. C. Smith sang "Because". The church was decorated for the occasion with large bunches of fern.
The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, wore a floor length gown of white sheer, with an embroidered bodice and bishop sleeves. Her floor length veil was caught to her head by a sweetheart headdress of net and she carried a white prayer book.
Ruth Wenzel, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid and wore a blue sheer floor gown with bishop sleeves and a blue halo headdress. She carried a beautiful bouquet of red roses.
Donald Hayes attended the groom and the ushers were Olin Wenzel and Bob Bridge.
Following the wedding ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, with her mother receiving the guests in a navy blue crepe with a corsage of red roses. She was assisted by the groom's mother, who wore a black crepe dress and corsage of red roses.
For going away Mrs. Bridge donned a pink wool dress, with a fushia coat and black accessories. The young couple are now making their home in Palmerston.
