- Was educated in Park River, North Dakota, USA. Came to Canada in 1904. John Ernest homesteaded on SE Section 10, Township 24, Range 22, West 2nd Meridian (from Archives of Canada) at Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1904. Built his house in 1906 for $40 and a barn for #70. Moved to Hawarden, Saskatchewan in 1911. In 1913 was living in Hawarden, when his father died. Bought his first new Model T Ford in 1917 for $495. Moved to fourteen miles east of Kenaston, Saskatchewan in 1929. In 1953 retired and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Buried in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Section - Garden of the Last Supper, Lot 294 D1.

Obtained entry to homestead 30 March 1905. (Supplementary application for Entry to Homestead by John E. Baird on 8 June 1906 in Lumsden. Previous applicants were Claus H. Hinck and Benjamin Wright). Lived there 1 June 1906 - 10 December 1906; 1 June 1907 - 10 December 1907; 1 April 1908 - 17 October 1908. In 1905 broke 10 acres. In 1906 broke additional 25 acres and had 10 acres in crop. In 1907 broke additional 30 acres and had 35 acres in crop. In 1908 broke additional 40 acres and had 65 acres in crop. In 1905 had 4 horses, in 1906 had 3 horses, in 1907 & 1908 had 4 horses. In 1908 had a frame house 10' X 12', $50, a frame stable, $70, a well $10. Application signed and sworn 17 October 1908 in Strasburg, Sask., Land Agent recommendation 13 November 1908 in Regina, Sask., Accepted in Ottawa 12 January 1909. John Ernest Baird produced a Certificate of Naturalization dates 16 November 1908. Sworn statements by William Taylor and Joseph People on 17 October 1908 that John Ernest Baird had lived on and improved the property as stated. Land Patent was issued 8 February 1909.

BAIRD - The passing of John Ernest Baird in his 74th year, beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Alice Baird of 838 Third Street East, Saskatoon, occurred in a local hospital on Friday, December 30, 1960. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 3, at 2 p.m. from Park Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. L.R. Agew. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. E. Deaver (Doris) of Davidson, Sask., three sons, Lawrence, Robert and John all of Kenaston, Sask.; one sister, Miss Agnes Baird of Lumsden, Sask.; one brother James of Regina, Sask. and five grandchildren. The late Mr. Baird was born in Park River, North Dakota and came to Saskatchewan to homestead at Strasbourg in 1903. He was married to the former Miss Elizabeth Alice McNaughton in 1912 and moved to Hawarden where he farmed until moving to Kenaston in 1929. Upon retirement from the farm in 1953 he came to Saskatoon where he had resided until passing. Honorary pallbearers were Alex Evans, Ernie Evans, Andrew McBroom and Arthur Watson. Active pallbearers were Jos Haythernthwaite, George Wicken, John Podoleski, Lloyd Deaver, George Milbery and Anton Tisnie. Interment took place in the family plot in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
