History of Mabel Adeline (Smith) Kriter: (provided by daughter Jane McColl)
Mabel was born August 30, 1897 in Minto Township, a daughter for William and Fanny Smith and a sister for Norma.
Mabel spent her early years in the Minto Township area. At the age of 15, in 1912, she finished high school. She was too young to enter Teachers College so Mabel stayed home for one year. Her mother was a seamstress and held classes so she helped out.
Mabel entered Stratford Normal School at 17 and finished at 18. She taught two years in Palmerston; one year in Chatham and two years at Kerr Road School, Aldborough Township, Elgin County.
Mabel married Reuben Kriter in 1921 where they took up farming. They had two sons and one daughter, Donald, Bruce and Jane. Donald died from an accident in Manitoba where he was working for an oil drilling company in 1951.
      Reuben died in 1956.
In 1959, Mabel returned to the Kerr Road School teaching all grades in a one room school house until 1965 when schools amalgamated.
In her retirement she has travelled extensively on many guided tours. She has been to the East and West Coasts of Canada as well as Alaska, Bermuda, Florida, various European countries, England, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, France and Italy.
Mabel has been commended for her lovely needlework and quilting abilities throughout her life.
She was the last surviving member of the senior ladies Sunday School class at Churchville.
She was a valued member of the Evangelical United Brethren and held many offices in the WMS (Women's Missionary Society) which was organized in 1923; she taught Catechism to the young children's group.
Mabel is currently a member of the Rodney United Church and UCW (United Church Women's Group).
She has six grandchildren: Kevin Kriter, Carol Mistele, Deborah Slaats, Nancy McColl, Kathy Burrell, Don McColl.
