• Notes

  Andrew came to Canada in 1796 along with his brother David. He was accompanied by his second wife Jean and daughter. He initially came to Newark (now Niagara on the Lake) and later moved to the new capital of Upper Canada, York (now Toronto). As a stone mason he assisted in the construction of the new parliament buildings. Later in 1798, he followed his brother David to settle in Scarborough clearing land and creating a homestead, which he named Springfield. There he served in the administration of the community. He was elected Town Warden amd was pound keeper. A petition for additional land, was submitted by Andrew in 1799. Most illuminating are the descriptions which these documents give. Andrew was described as: 'Blue eyes, brown hair, about 5 ft 11 inches high, 50 years of age'. Four children were born in Scotland, two born in Town of York and three born in Scarborough. Andrew and Jean's daughter, Mary, married her first cousin Christopher Thomson, son of William Thomson and Anna Little. Andrew is buried in St Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery (Bendale) Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
