Roy Herbert Thomson, 1st Lord Thomson of Fleet died on 4 August 1976 at Wellington Hospital, St John's Wood, London, at age 82; "He gave a new direction to the British newspaper industry. A strange and adventurous man from nowhere, ennobled by the great virtues of courage and integrity and faithfulness" - a plaque in his memory in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, London, unveiled in 1979 by Harold MacMillan.
