    • Roy Herbert Thomson 1st Ld. Thomson of Fleet was born on 5 June 1894 at Toronto. He was
      the son of Herbert Thomson and Alice Maud Coombs. Roy Herbert Thomson, 1st Lord Thomson of
      Fleet married Edna Alice Irvine on 29 July 1916. Roy Herbert Thomson, 1st Lord Thomson
      of Fleet died on 4 August 1976 at Wellington Hospital, St John's Wood, London, at age 82;
      "He gave a new direction to the British newspaper industry. A strange and adventurous man
      from nowhere, ennobled by the great virtues of courage and integrity and faithfulness" -
      a plaque in his memory in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, London, unveiled in 1979 by
      Harold MacMillan.
